One of South Delhi’s oldest religious and cultural institutions, Dakshin Delhi Kalibari has designed its Puja pandal to recreate the familiar sights, aesthetics and ambience of Kolkata and Bengal. What makes this year’s presentation distinctive is that Kalibari members themselves have handled the entire concept and execution, without the involvement of professional artists. Their collective effort reflects a deep sense of belonging, creativity and commitment to preserving their cultural heritage.

Subrata Das, General Secretary of Dakshin Delhi Kalibari, said that traditional aesthetics and community participation remain at the heart of this year’s celebrations. “Our aim is to present Bengal’s heritage with the respect it deserves while giving the Puja a distinctive identity through the creativity and collective efforts of our members. The theme ‘Bangla Beyond Bengal’ expresses our commitment to keeping our cultural roots alive, even far from home,” he said.

The festive ambience at Dakshin Delhi Kalibari extends beyond the main Puja pandal, with decorations inspired by Bengal’s cultural heritage and artistic traditions. The overall presentation seeks to recreate the warmth and familiarity of a traditional Bengali Durga Puja, where devotion, art, food and community celebrations come together. The emphasis on traditional aesthetics lends the premises a distinctly Bengali character, allowing visitors to experience a glimpse of Bengal’s festive spirit in the heart of Delhi. The decorations complement the ekchala Durga idol adorned with daker saaj, reinforcing the theme ‘Bangla Beyond Bengal’ and celebrating the cultural identity of Bengalis living away from their homeland.

Food is another integral part of the celebrations, adding flavour and vibrancy to the festive experience. Bengali cuisine, with its distinctive flavours and culinary traditions, holds a special place during Durga Puja, bringing together families, friends and visitors over familiar delicacies. The food stalls create an inviting space where visitors can savour traditional Bengali dishes and festive favourites while enjoying the celebratory atmosphere. From popular Bengali snacks to traditional sweets, the culinary offerings evoke memories of the festive streets of Kolkata, where food is as much a part of the Puja experience as the rituals and cultural programmes. The stalls also provide an opportunity for visitors from different communities to explore Bengal’s rich gastronomic heritage.

The combination of traditional decorations, Bengali culinary flavours and a welcoming community atmosphere makes the celebration more than a religious observance. It becomes a cultural gathering where people can reconnect with their roots, introduce younger generations to Bengali customs and share their traditions with a wider audience. In keeping with the spirit of ‘Bangla Beyond Bengal’, Dakshin Delhi Kalibari brings together the many elements of Bengali life—faith, art, food and fellowship—creating a festive space that celebrates the enduring bond between a community and its homeland.

Environmental responsibility is another important aspect of the celebrations. Eco-friendly materials have been used for the pandal decorations and idol-making, reflecting the Kalibari’s efforts to make religious festivities more sustainable. Highlighting the institution’s commitment to protecting the Yamuna from pollution, Das said that since 2014, the Kalibari has arranged for idol immersion in a dedicated water tank within the temple premises. The initiative offers an environmentally conscious alternative to river immersion while encouraging greater awareness of the ecological impact of religious celebrations.

Beyond Durga Puja, Dakshin Delhi Kalibari has established itself as a centre for religious harmony, social inclusion and public service. The temple premises welcome people from all communities, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and togetherness. Its community service initiatives include serving free bhog to thousands of people daily, without the requirement of coupons, underscoring the institution’s commitment to accessibility, compassion and collective welfare.

The dedication of its members, effective management, and warm hospitality have contributed to Dakshin Delhi Kalibari’s distinctive identity. Its member-led celebrations and inclusive community initiatives not only bring people together but also help younger generations remain connected to their Bengali heritage while growing up away from their ancestral homeland.

This year, ‘Bangla Beyond Bengal’ brings together tradition, environmental awareness and collective creativity, demonstrating how cultural identity can flourish beyond geographical boundaries. Through its traditional idol, Bengal-inspired pandal and community-centred approach, Dakshin Delhi Kalibari celebrates not only Durga Puja but also the enduring spirit of a community that continues to carry the essence of Bengal wherever it calls home.

The Association is geared up to celebrate Durga Puja 2026 with a colourful series of cultural events, musical performances and traditional festivities from October 15 to 21.
