Dilip Guha ★ New Delhi : Staying true to its rich legacy, Dakshin Delhi Kalibari, established in 1968, proudly organises its 58th Annual Durga Puja, to be held from September 29 to October 2, 2025, at the temple premises at R K Puram, New Delhi

This year’s theme, “নারী শক্তির জাগরণ” (Awakening of Women’s Power), honors the strength, creativity, and leadership of women in all spheres of life. In a heartfelt tribute to this spirit, women are taking center stage in every facet of the celebration—from planning and organizing to artistic expression.

True to tradition, the pandal and décor are being created by Kalibari members themselves, with special emphasis on traditional alpana—vibrant folk floor art—hand-painted by the community. These intricate designs reflect both cultural heritage and the collective devotion of the members.

Tradition Meets Craftsmanship

The General Secretary, Shri Subrata Das, speaking on the occasion, says that “the festivities will reflect the temple’s commitment to inclusivity and community participation. Women devotees and volunteers are actively involved in every aspect of the Puja—from rituals and logistics to cultural programming and decoration.”

“The pandal decoration, adorned with traditional alpana motifs, is hand-painted by Kalibari members themselves, reviving a beloved folk art form. The Durga idol will follow the classic ekchala style, evoking the timeless grace of Bengal’s sculptural heritage.”

“During the puja days, each day, thousands of devotees are expected to partake in the bhog—a sacred community meal prepared and served with devotion,” he added.

Legacy of Leadership

The late Bharat Ratna and former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee had been closely associated with Dakshin Delhi Kalibari’s Durga Puja since 1982, lending his presence and blessings to the celebrations. His legacy continues to inspire the temple’s commitment to cultural preservation and civic harmony.

Cultural Programs Spotlight Local Talent

In a heartfelt nod to grassroots artistry, this year’s cultural programs will feature local performers, showcasing music, dance, and drama rooted in India’s diverse traditions. The festivities commenced on Mahalaya (September 21), marking the spiritual beginning of Durga Puja. Under the leadership of Sudip Guha Roy, Aagamoni Music Foundation presented a musical narrative performance based on Mahishasur Mardini.”

In the wee hours of Mahalaya day, marking the end of Pitru Paksha and the beginning of Devi Paksha, Mahalaya holds immense spiritual significance for Bengalies. The invocation of the Goddess through Birendra Krishna Bhadra’s powerful narration, the stirring Sanskrit shlokas, and soul-stirring music has created a programme that transcends generations. It is more than just a broadcast — it is a tradition deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric of Bengal and beyond.

Thousands of miles from Bengal, devotees at DDKB were overcome with nostalgia as they watched Mahisasurmardini and listened to Bajlo Tomar Alor Benu—a sacred ritual that, for them, became a fragile thread weaving together memory, faith, and the feeling of home.
