Dilip Guha New Delhi, 20th MAY, 2026: As India advances in its Sweet Revolution, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, is reshaping rural livelihoods in remarkable ways. At the heart of this transformation are the tiniest yet most powerful agents of change—bees. Their quiet labour is driving ecological balance and economic empowerment, proving that sometimes the smallest creatures spark the greatest revolutions.

Beekeeping today is far more than the pursuit of honey. It is a lifeline for the environment, a practice that sustains biodiversity, strengthens agriculture through pollination, and safeguards the delicate web of life on Earth. By nurturing bees, communities are not only generating income but also investing in ecological resilience—making beekeeping a cornerstone of sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

Marking World Honey Bee Day 2026, KVIC organised a series of nationwide virtual programmes on Wednesday through its headquarters in Mumbai, state and divisional offices, and the Central Bee Research and Training Institute (CBRTI), Pune. The celebrations underscored how beekeeping has evolved from a traditional rural activity into a significant ecological and economic movement.

Addressing beekeepers, beneficiaries, scientists, students, and KVIC officials virtually from the Gandhi Darshan office in New Delhi, KVIC Chairman Shri Manoj Kumar highlighted the growing importance of honeybees in sustaining both nature and livelihoods as per the press release.

He also virtually inaugurated a Honey Exhibition at CBRTI, Pune.

Addressing participants joined virtually from across the country, Chairman, KVIC, Shri Manoj Kumar said that this year’s World Honey Bee Day programmes have been organised through virtual mode in accordance with Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of energy conservation, judicious use of resources and effective management with minimal expenditure. This not only reduced unnecessary travel and fuel consumption, but also ensured the participation of a large number of people from different states of the country

This year’s global theme — “Bee Together for People and the Planet” — resonated strongly throughout the programme, which focused on environmental conservation, agricultural productivity and biodiversity preservation. Participants from different parts of the country shared inspiring stories of how beekeeping has transformed lives, generated income and strengthened local economies.

Honeybees: Tiny Creatures with a Massive Ecological Role

Beyond honey production, beekeeping plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. Honeybees are among nature’s most effective pollinators, directly contributing to food security and agricultural productivity. Their role in pollination supports crop diversity, enhances yields and sustains entire ecosystems.

KVIC’s initiatives have increasingly positioned beekeeping as an environmentally responsible livelihood model that combines economic opportunity with ecological stewardship.

Reflecting Sustainable Governance

Speaking during the programme, Shri Manoj Kumar said the decision to organise this year’s celebrations virtually was in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s emphasis on energy conservation, efficient resource management and minimising unnecessary expenditure.

He noted that the digital format significantly reduced travel and fuel consumption while enabling wider participation from across the country. According to him, such initiatives demonstrate how technology can support sustainable governance while connecting rural communities nationwide.

The Chairman emphasised that honeybees are “protectors of nature and the agricultural ecosystem” and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming the “White Revolution into a Sweet Revolution” has accelerated self-employment and self-reliance in villages.

India’s ‘Sweet Revolution’

Recalling the launch of the Sweet Revolution in Banaskantha, Gujarat in 2016, Shri Manoj Kumar said Prime Minister Modi’s vision went far beyond a slogan. “Where there has been a White Revolution, there will now also be a Sweet Revolution,” the Prime Minister had declared — a vision aimed at empowering villages, farmers and rural entrepreneurs.

Inspired by this vision, KVIC launched its Honey Mission in 2017, which has since become a major driver of rural employment and entrepreneurship.

According to KVIC, between 2017-18 and 2025-26, the Commission distributed over 2.46 lakh bee boxes and bee colonies across the country. These efforts contributed to an increase of more than 24,269 metric tonnes in honey production.

In 2025-26 alone, honey production under the initiative touched an estimated 5,512 metric tonnes. Indian honey is also finding a growing international market, with honey exports by KVIC-associated beekeepers reaching nearly ₹31 crore during the financial year.

Countries including the United States, Canada, the UAE, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Singapore, Australia, Qatar and the Republic of Korea are among the major importers of Indian honey, reflecting increasing global acceptance of India’s natural and sustainably produced honey.

A Call to Protect Bees and Promote Rural Prosperity

Calling upon citizens and beekeepers to strengthen the movement, Shri Manoj Kumar urged people to see beekeeping not merely as a source of honey but as a powerful instrument for environmental protection, agricultural growth and rural prosperity. In his appeal to beekeepers across the country, he said that beekeeping should not be viewed merely as a means of honey production. It is also a powerful tool for nature conservation, agricultural growth and rural prosperity. He called upon everyone to take a pledge on World Honey Bee Day to protect honeybees, connect more people with beekeeping and take the Prime Minister’s “Sweet Revolution” to every village in the country.

The growing success of KVIC’s Honey Mission demonstrates that meaningful transformation often begins with the smallest of creatures. In India’s evolving rural landscape, honeybees are proving that ecological sustainability and economic empowerment can thrive together — one hive at a time.
