Dilip Guha ★ New Delhi : Japonchitro Natya Goshthi, a prominent theatre group based in the capital, staged Shodh—a play based on Taslima Nasrin’s powerful novel of the same name—on 25th August 2025 at Shri Ram Centre for Performing Arts, New Delhi. The date held special significance, marking the birthday of the celebrated literary figure herself. The performance was preceded by a heartfelt celebration of Taslima Nasrin’s life and legacy.

Over the years, Japonchitro Natya Goshthi has earned widespread acclaim for its thought-provoking productions across genres, consistently recognised for artistic excellence. This time, the group proudly presented a full-length stage adaptation of Shodh, written and directed by Suhan Bose, a passionate theatre enthusiast and renowned stage artist of this generation.

The storyline of Shodh (“Redemption”) unfolds with a straightforward narrative—simple in language and structure, yet profound in its emotional and thematic depth. As the title suggests, it is a tale rooted in vengeance, but also layered with introspection and resistance. The simplicity of the dialogue belies the complexity of its subject matter, as the novel explores the lived realities of women in contemporary Bengal through the lens of one woman’s journey.

Jhumur, the protagonist, marries for love only to find herself trapped in a stifling marriage. Educated and eloquent, she enters her union with Arun out of genuine affection, but is soon suffocated by the quiet tyranny of domestic expectations and her husband’s deep-seated suspicion. Bound to a man of volatile temperament, she endures a life governed by unreasonable dictates, her most heartfelt desires left to wither in silence.

In a bold act of rebellion, Jhumur engages in an affair with an artist—the brother-in-law of a downstairs tenant a doctor—, and she bears a child conceived with the artist. Arun, unaware of the truth, raises the child as his own. The silence Jhumur maintains about the child’s paternity becomes both shield and sword—a haunting gesture that protects her truth while subtly exposing the societal structures that demand its suppression. While some critics may view her path to liberation as morally ambiguous, the emotional urgency driving her choices is deeply compelling and undeniably human.

Anindita Sett

These eventful episodes are portrayed with remarkable finesse in the production. The role of Jhumur is brought to life with quiet intensity by Anindita Sett, whose performance unfolds not in grand gestures but in subtle acts of resistance. Her portrayal captures Jhumur’s quiet defiance—neither a victim nor a transgressor, but a woman determined to shape her own destiny amidst love, betrayal, and societal expectations. Through nuanced dialogue delivery, expressive physicality, and emotional transitions, Anindita evoked deep empathy from the audience, making the character feel truly alive on stage.

The character I portrayed—complex, layered, and emotionally intense—is the kind of role any actress would hope to explore at least once in her career. And to perform it under the watchful eye of the writer herself added an extra layer of both pressure and privilege.
It was a challenging yet deeply fulfilling experience—one I will always cherish.”

Regarding production, from design to performance, every element was thoughtfully arranged and executed, resonating deeply with the audience and evoking heartfelt emotions. The play’s central theme, message, and presentation were compelling. Enhanced by elegant stage design, evocative lighting, apt musical integration, and heartfelt ensemble performances, the artistic quality of this staging was truly exceptional.

Shodh is not just a story—it is a mirror to society, offering a critical lens on gender dynamics and social structures. It stands as a tribute to the indomitable spirit of women who dare to redefine their destinies.
